Also known as the ‘hunky weatherman’, Derek van Dam is South Africa’s best known weather guru. As ETV meteorologist he is instantly recognisable, but now you can also catch him on air on the Phat Joe Morning Show every weekday at 07:20.

Derek previously held a position at NBC near Detroit, Michigan, USA. There he also hosted a morning show so he is familiar with what it takes to start the day really early. He then travelled to South Africa with his non-profit organization ‘The Compassionate Life Foundation’. Soon after, he fell in love with the Mother City and now calls it his home away from home.

As a young boy, Derek had a huge fascination with the weather which naturally inspired him to become a weather man on TV. He followed his passion and enrolled at Central Michigan University where he studied Meteorology, Broadcast and Cinematic Arts and Mathematics.

Derek loves extreme sports such as rock and ice climbing, skydiving, bungee jumping and shark diving. He has played soccer his entire life, his favourite position being goalkeeper. He has run several half-marathons and plans to accomplish a full marathon or triathlon during his time in South Africa.
