Let's Play is a SuperSport initiative, as part of the company's social responsibility obligations, to encourage people to spend less time being inactive and more time engaging in physical activity.
There is an alarming apathy among children and adults today when it comes to physical activity. This has resulted in a younger population that is unfit and obese and would rather watch TV or play TV and computer games than engage in anything for which they have to work up a sweat.
Studies have shown that this physical state is reflected in a child's mental state (the old "healthy body, healthy mind" adage applies). So a physically unfit individual is likely to be less productive than one who partiCipates in some form of exercise.
In a nutshell, Let's Play encourages children to participate in sport or some form of physical activity. By highlighting the problems created by laziness (increased susceptibility to conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity), Let's Play hopes to encourage more children to participate in some form of exercise.
It is estimated that one in four children in South Africa is either overweight or obese, and obesity is one of the main causes of heart disease. Although obesity is related to unhealthy eating habits, it is also linked to the fact that children are less active than in the past.
Our vision together with our media partners is to raise awareness among the general public of the positive path to the healthy development of youth, through the participation in sport and to encourage communities, organizations and individuals to actively promote Let's Play.
To this end we welcome the continued support of Heart FM and trust that the relationship will grow from strength to strength.
