In July, Heart 104.9FM, local non-profit Newkidz on the Block, and the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet initiative teamed up for an extreme makeover of the Baphumelele Children’s Home in Khayelitsha.
The home cares for orphaned children up to the ages of 18, and was badly in need of repair.
Along with our Army of Angels, we spent a weekend rebuilding, repairing, repainting, refurbishing and more. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our many generous volunteers. So, from all of us at Heart 104.9FM, Newkidz, and MySchool – thank you, Cape Town, for showing your heart and helping needy kids.

Show your Heart – Helping Needy Kids
Heart 104.9FM’s corporate social investment brand “Show your Heart”, local non-profit NEWKIDZ on the Block, and the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet initiative are teaming together for an extreme makeover of the Baphumelele Children’s Home in Khayelitsha. The home cares for orphaned children up to the ages of 18, and is badly in need of repair.
With your help, we’d like to turn the house into a home. Over the weekend of the 29-31 July, we’ll be rebuilding, repairing, repainting, refurbishing and more. To do this, we need an army of angels, and we’re challenging you to be one of them.
Among other things, we will:
• Repair indoor and outdoor cement work
• Lay grass in between the houses
• Paint the interior and exterior walls
• Paint the ceiling and all doors
• Repair all light fittings and switches
• Repair plumbing
• Repair or replace cupboards and install new handles and hinges
• Replace or replace cornices
• Oversee minor handyman jobs
• Repair broken windows
• Install new curtain rails and curtains in all the rooms
• Provide new soft furnishings
• Repair some broken tiling and pave certain areas
Whether as an individual or a company, all volunteers and donations are welcome. Head to the NewKidz site. To volunteer, email newkidzsa@gmail.com, or call Hilda on 079 875 5745. NEWKIDZ on the Block, an established registered NPO based in Cape Town, concerned mainly with the plight of orphans in South Africa, will oversee all logistics related to the transformation of the Baphumalele Children’s Home. http://www.newkidz.org.za/
The MySchool Fundraising Programme has been helping to raise funds for schools, charities and environmental organisations for over 13 years. The programme allows community members to raise funds for a cause close to their heart without costing them a cent. Donations are given by their retail partners who have commited to a donation a percentage of every transaction you make at their stores when you present you MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet card. Helping to raise over R2,2 million every month, it is clear that “every swipe counts.” MySchool is sponsoring R130 000 towards the project and encourages their partners and cardholders to support the makeover through donations of cash or in kind. http://www.myschool.co.za/
