The first SPEEDO concept store to launch on the African continent opens at Canal Walk shopping centre in Cape Town this November and to celebrate the store launch, SPEEDO will be hosting a one-week visit from internationally acclaimed German three-dimensional artist Manfred Stader.

From 16 to 21 November Stader will create a unique 3D artwork in Canal Walk’s centre court. The artwork will be on view until the 29th of November. Stader is known as a ‘Master of 3D Street Painting’ and one of the world’s most sought-after ‘anamorphic’ artists. Anamorphosis is a style of painting that was widely used by artists in Renaissance and Baroque era painting in 16th century Italy to produce a special effect of exaggerated optical height and width. Since the 1980’s this style has been explored, adopted and taken onto the street by ‘3D street painters’.

Street painters like Stader produce three-dimensional artworks on two-dimensional surfaces, forgoing traditionally upright canvases for streets and sidewalks.

Stader received classical art training in Frankfurt in the early 1980’s and by 1985 he had established and perfected his popular 3D style of street art. He works predominantly in pastel chalk or acrylic paint, on plasterboard or floor stickers. He has been invited to take part in global 3D street art painting festivals and promotional events, and he has been commissioned to produce unique branded artworks for some of the world’s leading car and beverage brands.

His subject matter varies depending on the location and purpose of the project but Stader has a particular talent for producing interactive artworks where the public may pose with and integrate into the art image on the floor surface or pavement. This interaction is photographed or filmed, bringing the 3D qualities of Stader’s work to life in an entertaining, lifelike, amusing and sometimes shocking way. Stader loves to blur the lines of reality and imagination, encouraging onlookers to step onto his works and make believe that they’re literally walking on waterfalls, rivers, ice, swampy landscapes, cars or people’s heads!

To date, the subject matter of the SPEEDO commission at Canal Walk is yet to be revealed, but given the nature of the brand and Stader’s skill at creating realistic 3D images that incorporate water, the subject matter is likely to be water or swim-related…

Manufacturers of the world’s best swimwear since the 1920’s, SPEEDO is synonymous with creating high-performance swimwear and supporting products for competitive swimmers, as well as everyday fashion-forward beach and poolside gear for non-competitive customers. The local SPEEDO concept store will be the prototype for all new SPEEDO concept stores across the globe. It will showcase the widest selection of SPEEDO swimwear and equipment in Africa and provide one-stop swimming sports and leisure information for swim enthusiasts. Like SPEEDO, artist Manfred Stader combines performance and precision, to inspire and delight everyone who comes into contact with his artworks.
