MEDIA RELEASE

Road closures for Freedom of Entry parade.
Capetonians will be able to enjoy the pomp and ceremony of a full military parade this Saturday, 21 August 2010, when Air Force Base Ysterplaat exercises its right to freedom of entry into Cape Town for the first time.
At a special ceremony at the City Hall, Deputy Executive Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson, will hand over the official Freedom of Entry scroll to Officer Commanding, Colonel Bill Cowan.
This will be accompanied by a march past of 160 members of the unit. Depending on the weather, there will also be a fly past by the M2 Oryx, the Super Lynx and the C47-TP Dakota.
During the parade, Darling Street will be closed off completely between Buitenkant Street and Plein Street, from 09:00 to 14:00.
There will also be intermittent road closures in Plein Street, Longmarket Street, Parade Street, Buitenkant Street, Strand Street and Adderley Street. No parking will be allowed.
During the rehearsals on Thursday, 19 August, from 18:00 to 22:00 similar road closures and traffic diversions can be expected.
For the past 80 years, Ysterplaat has provided vital aerial support to the City of Cape Town, Provincial Government, SA Police Service, the National Sea Rescue Institute and Wilderness Search & Rescue.
Voted South Africas best Air Force Base for three consecutive years, Ysterplaat is home to 35 Squadron and 22 Squadron.
