Heart 2 Heart
Heart FM teams up with Newborns, Pick n Pay and Cape Argus to support Preemies
December 2015

Every year, 15 million premature babies are born worldwide and 8 out of 100 of these are born in South Africa. The rise in the number of premature births over the last 20 years has been alarming, and in many cases the exact cause of pre-term birth remains unknown.

Pre-term birth is the most common cause of death amongst infants worldwide, and 3 million prematurely born babies never make it past their first 28 days of life. More children die from being born too soon than from HIV Aids, malaria or diarrhoea. Life-saving neonatal care is highly specialised and very costly, and not all hospitals in South Africa are equipped to provide this level of care.

Fortunately in these challenging circumstances, the call for help is answered by a select and special few.

The Groote Schuur Neonatal Unit is one of only two tertiary units in the Western Cape capable of providing the specialised care that SA’s tiniest citizens so desperately in need. The Newborns Groote Schuur Trust, Pick n Pay, Cape Argus and Heart FM have joined forces to help raise funds that will go towards the expansion of Groote Schuur’s Neonatal Unit. The idea behind Newborns’ campaign is for customers to purchase a R10 ticket at their local Pick n Pay. All proceeds go towards the much needed renovation for the Neonatal Unit and the 3200 babies it cares for annually.

The Campaign kicks off on the 17th of December, and runs until the 17th of February 2016. If you’d like to help, you can head to any one of the Pick n Pay stores throughout the Western Cape and buy your R10 ticket. Customers also stand a chance to win groceries worth R2000 every week with each ticket purchased. You can find all the details at your local Pick n Pay and on the Newborns website,
